Dr. Purkaple received a Bachelor's of Art in Classics and a Bachelor's of Science in Chemistry at the University of Oklahoma where she was named a Goldwater Scholar for her research in biochemistry. She taught high school in Oklahoma City for four years before returning to medical school at the University of Oklahoma Health Science Center.

During her years in medical school, she was given the opportunity to conduct research led by Dr. James Mold. His passion for patient-centered, research-driven primary care inspired her to pursue residency in Family Medicine. She completed her residency at the University of Oklahoma Health Science Center Family Medicine Program. She is currently working at a clinic in Michigan.
